I am testing if the background mode create a sub-shell

$ num=100; echo $num &
[1] 5873
100
[1]+ Done echo $num

$ echo $num
100

It indicates the $num is accessible from the current shell, verify it not a sub-shell.

If not a subshell, how could it execute without interrupting the current shell?
