How can I configure xkb to switch layouts both ways?

If I run setxkbmap -layout us,us -variant altgr-intl,colemak -option grp:alt_space_toggle, I can switch from the AltGr-International layout to Colemak by pressing Alt+Space. But it doesn't work the other way around, i.e. I can't switch from Colemak to AltGr-International with Alt-Space. I've also tried running setxkbmap -layout us,us -variant altgr-intl,colemak -option grp:alt_space_toggle,grp:alt_space_toggle, but that doesn't seem to work, either. How can I configure XKB so that Alt+Space works in both directions?
I'm on NixOS, if that makes any difference.
