Can't control master volume

When starting my laptop this morning, I noticed that the volume control slider is missing on the top right panel, which is why I cannot control the master volume anymore and I have to use the volume slider in the apps I'm running(if present). Fn+Left/Fn+Right/Fn+0 also don't work.
My speakers are working properly though.
Strangely, when I open alsamixer, I can change the master volume there. But some audio sources stop playing(eg. chrome/youtube).
I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 on a MSI ge72-6qd notebook.
Is there some way to bring back the volume control as well as the keyboard shortcuts?
Thanks in advance,
Lydia
