Catching usb-Printer Errors in CUPS

I am using the Raspberry Pi /Raspbian OS, and I would like to ask how we can catch errors in a printer? Like paper jam or no paper available in the printer?
I am currently printing documents using my Canon IP2770 printer and I would like to know how to catch errors in the printer and display them into a (python?) app.
