I recently bought an external microphone, but when using it to record something, the result is just static noise. The microphone is being recognized as "Rear Microphone (plugged in)" when I execute pavucontrol.

Any ideas?

Too load noise, mixer controls, interference from your hw, wrong channels, you using the wrong port, who knows. You are in a technical group and not in a paid helpdesk forum, I would advise adding debugging and technical data to any questions asked.
