I have a OMEN X by HP - 17t-ap000 CTO triple booted with ubuntu 14.04, ubuntu 18.04 and windows 10. Since I first dual booted the computer I've had trouble starting Ubuntu 14.04. After selecting the OS on the Grub menu it gets stuck on a purple screen, I cannot enter a terminal with ctrl-alt-F[x] and no key combos I can think of work. The only way I've been able to shut it down is to hold the power button down. For some reason triple booting with ubuntu 16.04 helped this problem a lot and allowed me to boot without issue far more frequently. Recently the problem has become much worse and affects all of my OSs. Even Windows is getting stuck right after the grub bootloader.
I've tried to run some experiments to see if I could find a clear pattern of behavior:
- Starting windows first, shutting down and then booting ubuntu seems to increase the likelihood that ubuntu will boot
- Windows is the least affected booting the most often
- I believe the problem got worse after running a sudo apt-get upgrade on ubuntu 14.04 which I know affected Grub because it changed the boot order
- Being plugged into a second monitor doesn't seem to play a role
- Being plugged into the charger doesn't seem to play a role
boot grub freeze
