Why are not environment variables command-completed?

For example, I cannot enter $HO and then press tab to acquire $HOME. It seems like it could/should be done or has this already been disregarded?

  • Looks like we might have to narrow this down a bit, as a stock Debian system here will complete $HOM to $HOME (once I get past HOSTNAME and HOSTTYPE); same for echo $US<TAB> resulting in echo $USER
