Linux Mint 19 buggy display on external monitor

Clash Royale CLAN TAG#URR8PPP
I have an older Lenovo P500 laptop (Hardware maintenance manual) w/ HDMI and VGA outputs running Linux Mint 19. I would like to use a Dell E2414H monitor which has VGA and DVI-D inputs.
I initially tried a VGA adapter, however there is some electrical interference caused by the laptop power supply. I purchased an HDMI-DVI-D cable, and after a few reboots it was detected and outputs as expected.
However, now on the primary (laptop) display, when I move the cursor or windows, there are large blacked-out tiles that appear on the display.
Supposedly all Intel graphics drivers are included in Mint and should "just work"... any suggestions?
Would like to understand any further troubleshooting steps and get a deeper understanding in to what the issue may be. Thank you!
