I can change the Lynx user agent by lynx -useragent "Lynx Foo" <url>. However, when I try to change the user agent in ~/.lynxrc, it does not take effect:

/usr/local/etc/lynx.cfg:

ENABLE_LYNXRC:SEND_USERAGENT:ON
ENABLE_LYNXRC:USERAGENT:ON

~/.lynxrc

SEND_USERAGENT=TRUE
USERAGENT=Lynx Bar

Usage:

export LYNX_CFG=$HOME/.lynxrc # Update: This is the problem. Don't do this.
lynx -trace -trace-mask=8

  • Where's your indication that it's supported? I'm looking through lynx.invisible-island.net/lynx_help/cattoc.html and I don't see "USERAGENT" listed.

  • Did you try setting that flag to "ON"? seems that would go in lynx.cfg

  • It's possible I'm misunderstanding! The maintainer has an account here at U&L, so there's a chance they'll see it and be able to speak more authoritatively on it.

  • If the setting is "ON", as suggested, then (see the help file): Settings are read from .lynxrc after the corresponding data from lynx.cfg, so they override lynx.cfg, which is probably what users expect. There's a trace-file setting which would show what's read (lynx -trace -trace-mask=8). Also the keywords are matched ignoring case.

  • The : that you used in .lynxrc should be an = (like the other settings in that file). The lynx.cfg file uses colons...
