System font for X11-forwarded applications

I'm using a headless CentOS machine, and now and then I use ssh/X-forwarding to open graphical applications. However, the font used in those applications is not nice and I would like to change it -- but don't know how. Besides the Xorg stuff, I haven't installed any desktop environment, so I would need to do that on CLI. Any ideas?
