I'm getting the following error when trying to install the sf package in R (R/3.4.2/gcc7.2.0) on CentOS 7.

install.packages('sf')

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Configuration failed because libudunits2.so was not found. Try installing:
* deb: libudunits2-dev (Debian, Ubuntu, ...)
* rpm: udunits2-devel (Fedora, EPEL, ...)
* brew: udunits (OSX)
If udunits2 is already installed in a non-standard location, use:
--configure-args='--with-udunits2-lib=/usr/local/lib'
if the library was not found, and/or:
--configure-args='--with-udunits2-include=/usr/include/udunits2'
if the header was not found, replacing paths with appropriate values.
You can alternatively set UDUNITS2_INCLUDE and UDUNITS2_LIBS manually.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not have sudo permissions on this system, and need to compile from source. I've downloaded and unpacked the source from here ftp://ftp.unidata.ucar.edu/pub/udunits (udunits-2.2.26.tar.gz) in my home directory. I then tried installing the R package again by setting the configure.args to the location of this unpacked udunits library. I'm still getting the same error though.

install.packages('sf', configure.args = c('--with-udunits2-include=/home/username/udunits-2.2.26')

How do I compile this from source and configure it to work with R?
