I am trying to zip or tar the backup folders individually inside parent directory. But what i observed is zip or tar command is creating duplicate folder with .zip or .tar.gz of the original directories inside parent folder.I want the original directory to be in zipped format instead of seperate duplicate name.zip.
a,b,c,d,e,f are sub directories i implemented below tar command.Same happens with zip command.

command:
for i in *; do tar -czf $i.tar.gz $i; done

output: ls /parent_driectory

a a.tar.gz b b.tar.gz c c.tar.gz d d.tar.gz f f.tar.gz g g.tar.gz

expected output

a.tar.gz b.tar.gz c.tar.gz d.tar.gz f.tar.gz g.tar.gz
