I have copied files to external hard drive and take usb off from the computer (did not do unmount)
when connected back the external hard drive, I do not see the files that I just did copied.

You must always issue aumount
command or use your file manager to unmount the disk. This allows the buffer to dump, sync and flush the contents and finish updating the destination disk. My hunch is that your files are still on the disk you copied them from.

That is exactly the reason why you should do a proper unmount before you remove the storage or turn your computer off.
