Often I need to disconnect my laptop from the external monitor and re-connect some time later. Each time I have to re-configure the other monitor, in particular tell that it shall be used and what the physical alignment with the laptop screen is.

I know that I can set all this with xrandr command line options, yet I wonder if there is a method like

xrandr >screen.settings
#unplug/plug screen
xrandr screen.settings

to save and later restore exactly what we had? I cannot seem to find an option of xrandr that does it. Is there some other means?
