I am trying to change the password of my root and other users. When I try it using passwd it takes me to another prompt without asking the new password. As in:

[root@southapp2 ~]# passwd
[root@southapp2 root]#

What Unix is this? Could you show the output of type passwd? I'm assuming you are doing this as the root user?

  • Hi Kusala, I am using RHEL 6.1 and trying this as root user, and I tried with other users as well. When I type passwd the output is as follows. [gopal@southapp2 ~]$ passwd [root@southapp2 gopal]#

  • Thanks. What I asked for was the output of the command type passwd (the type command with the word passwd as an argument).
