Accessing GPU and drawing on screen without X11

Is there a way to access the GPU, and draw directly on a screen, without passing through a windowing server like X11 or Wayland.

For example to get an OpenGL renderbuffer, and write into it using OpenGL, or CUDA/OpenCL context sharing.

Is this possible using EGL?

This sounds like it: EGL Eye: OpenGL Visualization without an X Server
