zsh + vi-mode: enter Insert mode before executing command

I am using zsh
with vi-mode
enabled, along with a visual cue for [NORMAL]
mode displayed in $RPS1
, all set up like this:
bindkey -v
MODE_INDICATOR="%$fg[cyan]% [% NORMAL]% %$reset_color%"
function vi_mode_prompt_info()
echo "$$KEYMAP/vicmd/$MODE_INDICATOR/(main"
RPS1='$(vi_mode_prompt_info)'
What bugs me a bit is that whenever I execute a command while in Normal mode, the visual cue (that [NORMAL]
at the right hand edge of the terminal) remains in history, and also acts jittery whenever I resize terminal.
I would like to automatically enter Insert mode immediately before every command is executed, in order to remove [NORMAL]
cue from history.
How can this be set up?
zsh vi-mode

I can't reproduce the indicator under zsh 5.4.2.$KEYMAP
is only available in widgets. Does it work in a more recent version? Please post complete code to reproduce the problem. In addition to the$KEYMAP
visibility, you're missingsetopt prompt_subst
andautoload colors; colors
(or instead remove the color stuff which isn't needed for this question).
