Why did Thunderbird move Inbox emails to subfolder unsuccessfully? I have a different number of emails now in both folders

I highlighted all Inbox emails and moved them to another folder (lets call it inbox2). It didn't work as intended. I'm using IMAP.
The items seemed to be moving but mid transfer I noticed my Inbox retrieving emails from the server again. Now, all transfers have completed and both folders do not even have the same number of emails. inbox2 has less than my inbox; I have no idea how this can be. Both mailboxes have the first and most recent emails - it has nothing to do with timestamps.
I'm worried some emails may have been moved to inbox2 and not be in inbox. I'm also worried some may not have moved to inbox2 and may still be in inbox. Is it also possible some emails got corrupted? Thunderbird was unresponsive but I let it carry out its operations without interruption.
Why did this happen? I assumed it would be as simple and quick as when you cut and paste files. Instead, the process took well over an hour or even two. I have a strong and stable network connection and I did not close Thunderbird so I do not think corruption could have occurred (Whilst I am very concerned, I cannot imagine any emails just vanished), though I also didn't expect this result. Thunderbird did become unresponsive at times but I did not interrupt it and let it finish - unsuccessfully.
Edit: I'm using Outlook. And did not receive any new emails
