I know that in *nix, a mask is any bit pattern used in bitwise operations (hence it is often called bitmask).

How it differs from umask? (user mask? unix mask?)

umask, utime, and ulimit were added in USG UNIX and then other UNIXes adopted them. u probably stands for user.

  • I'm not sure what your question is. Are you asking whether there's a difference between a umask and a mask? Are you asking how a umask is used when the system checks file access?

  • I do ask the first thing you mention. I edited my question to explain what I ask exactly.
