Potentially interesting problem. How would I go about reliably running a command whenever another, specific computer on the network goes offline? Bonus if the reliance on polling is very limited.

I have quite a few tools available, such as the computer in question, when "online" / functioning, is always resolvable through dns, mdns, and samba. Additionally, the other computer has SSH.

  • What's your criteria for offline? Does a reboot count? Does a network interruption count? How long should it be offline? Have you tried other monitoring tools?
