Colors in Gnome Terminal

I would like to change the default terminal color. I went to "profile preferences" and then I selected tango in the section "colors" in the "built-in schemes" but nothing happened. Why?

The word "terminal" is ... overloaded... to use a programming term. It could mean a local physical screen, or any number of GUI programs in an X11 virtual graphical environment.
