Evolution addressbok fails loading - how to investigate the cause?

I have been successfully using a range of nextcloud address books for years. Suddenly, one specific address book cannot be viewed anymore within evolution's contacts UI. It still loads successfully outside of the evolution factory, e.g. on other devices or via thunderbird.
In evolution I only get the error message
The reported error was âÂÂSocket I/O timed outâÂÂ.
So, I guess that an entry interferes in loading correctly. Either way, how can I check logs, etc? Please use comments to help me revise the question ;)

My first plan of attack would be looking at what's actually passing over the network. If you're using HTTPS with your Nextcloud server, temporarily disabling HTTPS (a few moments is all that is needed) will make debugging easier. There are alternative options if you don't want to disable HTTPS, they just add more fiddling. My next goal would be to install something like Wireshark to record a trace of what data is being sent/received to see where the hang is happening. It's plausible that you've encountered a bug in Evolution, and network diagnosis would be my first step.
