Unable to open X display error on Cinnamon (Linux Mint)

I'm using linux mint 18.3 Sylvia, i have tried to update python i did the steps as in this tutorial https://mintguide.org/other/794-python-3-6-install-latest-version-into-linux-mint.html but after that i had big issues like the lack of a menu bar and all kinds of window decoration so also i can not open terminal i'm only using a TTY terminal by pressing ctrl alt F1 also if i tried to access for example firefox i get this error message ERROR: no DISPLAY environment variable specified – so i tried to reinstall Cinnamon with this commands



sudo apt-get purge cinnamon

sudo apt-get install cinnamon


and that doesn't work also
i really have some important files and i don't want to lose them please help me.
