St. Anthony's High School is a Roman Catholic college preparatory (grades 9-12) school located in South Huntington, New York on Long Island. The school was founded in 1933 by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn

History

The school was founded as St. Anthony's Juniorate by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, New York in September 1931. At the time, it was designed to be an all-boys preparatory boarding school for prospective novitiates.

On August 31, 1933, ground broke on the Juniorate's new facility in Smithtown, New York. Students interested in the Juniorate attended St. Francis Preparatory School, which was then located in Brooklyn. The ground-breaking marks the founding of St. Anthony's and appears on the school's crest. The school never expanded to more than 50 or 60 pupils at one time during the early years. The first five students graduated in June 1935.^[2]

In 1949, the Franciscan Novitiate moved from Smithtown to Wyandanch, New York.^[2]

In 1958, the Juniorate expanded into a day school to serve the boys of the nearby towns. Anticipating this change, the school admitted no freshmen for a period of one year and changed its name to St. Anthony's High School. The school began to grow in size to its current population of nearly 2,500.

In June 1969, the school's juniorate program was terminated. Following the end of the program was a substantial increase in the percentage of lay faculty members and the presence of nuns.

On December 5, 1983, Most Reverend John R. McGann announced that, as part of extensive changes in the educational plans of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, Holy Family Diocesan High School, South Huntington, New York, would close in June 1984, and St. Anthony's High School will re-locate in the Holy Family facility. The two schools were athletic rivals and were forced to blend into one school.^[2]

Following this, the school began to admit young women. St. Anthony's is currently located in this former Holy Family location at 275 Wolf Hill Road in South Huntington.^[2]

On November 1, 2006 construction began on a Romanesque-style Chapel in the former senior courtyard. This is the first of many projects that make up the school's Strategic Planning Process, a multi-phase construction plan tailored to meet the growing population and needs of the Saint Anthony's student body. In 2007, construction began on a new Student Center, an added building to the school's campus for athletics and other extracurricular activities.^{[citation needed]}

Curriculum

The basic curriculum at St. Anthony's includes required courses in Theology, English, Social Studies and Physical Education (4 years); Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language (3 years); Fine Arts (Health, Art, Music or Drama) (1 year). Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered to students who qualify, with electives in all disciplines. The passing grade at St. Anthony's is 75% to ensure that each student leaves with a higher standard of excellence before entering college and a minimum grade of 80% is required for any letter of recommendation to college.^[3] Most students graduate with a New York State Advanced Regents diploma after successfully completing the Regents examinations. In cooperation with St. John's University, students are permitted to apply for St. John's University credits, or Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. These students must meet the requirements of St. John's University to be granted these credits.^{[citation needed]}

Awards and academic achievements

The "St. Bonaventure Certificate" is awarded to those students who attain an overall average of 94.50% or above in their courses for the year. The "Duns Scotus Certificate" is given to those students who attain an overall average between 89.50% and 94.49% in their courses. In recognition of the academic achievements of our students during the first, second, and third quarters of the school year, students who attain an average of 89.50% or above will be placed on the Honor Roll and an Honor Certificate will be given to them at the end of each quarter.^{[citation needed]}

Msgr. Peter J. Nolan Academic Scholarship Awards: Each year, the five highest ranking students from each year - Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior classes are awarded scholarships based on final numerical averages, for a total number of fifteen scholarships.^{[citation needed]}

Athletics

St. Anthony, initially based in Smithtown, began its sports legacy with Philip Gully, their first Cross Country Coach. Gully began his career with the "galloping Friars" in the late 50's with a small group of boys and by 1964 his Varsity and Freshman runners simultaneously swept the Nassau-Suffolk cross country championship at Sunken Meadow park. With the help of Brother's Noel and DePaul, the Name of St.Anthony track arrived on the sports pages of Newsday and others, weekly. In addition to their local prowess, the Friars branched out to New York city where at van cortlandt park and Randall's Island the took on their "city cousins". In 1967, winning the mile relay at the Penn Relays, St. Anthony took center stage on Long Island and thus began the influx of athletes for all sports especially the newly designed Football program.

St. Anthony's usual opponents include Chaminade and St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. It has been ranked as the number 1 sports program in New York state and top 50 in the country by Sports Illustrated^{[citation needed]}

The most lauded team at Saint Anthony's High School in the last 2 decades has been the varsity football team.^{[citation needed]} The Friars have won 10 out of the last 11 championships including 7 in a row from 2001–2007. This run has been orchestrated by head coach Rich Reichert. He has been so successful, the path leading to Cy Donnelly field from the parking lot has been designated "Reichert's Way".^{[citation needed]}

St. Anthony's also has a successful ice hockey team. The team won 7 straight county championships and won the New York State championship for New York State Amateur Hockey Association teams in the 2007–08 season. St. Anthony's hockey applied and was awarded membership to the Catholic High School Hockey League, part of the CHSAA, with members such as Iona Prep, Fordham Prep, Monsignor Farrell High School, Chaminade High School, and Archbishop Stepinac High School, for the 2008–09 season. In the 2009-10 season, the varsity hockey team won the CHSHL championship beating defending champion Monsignor Farrell. In the 2011–2012 Season the Hockey team won its first New York Catholic High School State title beating St.Francis of Athol Springs 4–3. Since joining the CHSHL, the JV team has also won four consecutive championships in the 2008–09, 2009–10, 2010–11, and 2011–12 seasons. The 2012 CHSAA NY State Championship team included all-state high school hockey legends Chris Wallace, James Mazza and Mike Marnell. The Varsity Men's Lacrosse team had always been among the top 10 schools in the nation.^{[citation needed]} They won the CHSAA AAA crown in four consecutive seasons, 2009–2012. Also, NHL St. Anthony's alumni, Rob Scuderi has won two Stanley Cups (one with Pittsburgh in 2009 and Los Angeles in 2012).

The Girls Swimming Varsity team has been a powerhouse winning five consecutive championships since 2005 including the 2010 championship. They won 4 straight consecutive championships from 2004–08.^{[citation needed]}

In 2008 the Boys Varsity Soccer team was undefeated to a league and state championship title. All ten of their graduated seniors went on to a D1 soccer school including Providence, UConn, St. John's, Fordham Prep, and the University of Delaware.

In 2010 the Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving team won their first league championship concluding their first undefeated season. Dan McBride was named coach of the year. The team then placed 4th at States and was proclaimed the top Catholic School.

St. Anthony's boasts a wrestling room that is the largest one in the United States, high school or college.

Activities

Dozens of extracurricular activities enable students to pursue wide variety of interests and talents, and can involve themselves in community service. The high school's instrumental and choral programs have performed in the great Cathedrals and Basilicas of Europe and in the United States.

Other activities include Stage Crew, Support Our Troops, Intramurals, S.A.D.D., Jazz Band, S.A.L.T. (St. Anthony's Leadership Team), Art Club, Gregorian Schola, C.A.R.E. The school has five publications namely, The Anthonian (yearbook), The Paduan (newspaper), The Friar Scoreboard (sports newspaper), Shades of Gray (literary magazine), and The Visionary (video yearbook).

Expansion

In the Fall of 2006, St. Anthony's completed its construction of its Field Turf field and new Mondo track. The new track is one of the few tracks at a high school level to have colored hand-off zones for relays. The athletic fields were redone leading into the 2018/19 School Year

Saint Anthony's completed construction and dedicated Our Lady of the Angles Chapel in 2009.

The Student Center was dedicated in May 2009. The 120,000-square-foot (11,000 m²) Student Center includes a 5 lane indoor track, wrestling room, locker rooms, chorus and band rooms, three art studios and a dance studio. St Anthony's also completed the construction of a brand new astro-turf baseball field with adjacent bullpen and batting cages behind the new dugouts in 2009.

In November 2013, St. Anthony's High School announced plans to renovate the science lab rooms. With the creation of the new Science Center, the school has one modern chemistry room, one chemistry/microbiology room, one earth science/physics room, two multidisciplinary rooms and one marine biology room. The center is also expected to include a FriarQuest research room where new technologies will be used to test advances in medicine and environmental studies. The final phase was completed during the summer of 2017. The New lab room, in connection with a local hospital is under construction during Fall and Winter of 2018, will allow students to have a more indepth understanding of the Human body and Anatomy.

In January 2016, the school had completed its second turf football field, James C. Metzger Stadium.

Traditions

The pep rallies at St. Anthony's are packed with traditions. At the "homecoming" pep rally in the fall the Homecoming King and Queen are crowned. They "knight" the varsity football players as the "Homecoming Guard" after the announcement is made. The symphonic band also plays during the pep rallies.

At St. Anthony's football games, one freshman who is especially short and light is named as the season mascot. He wears a habit (robe) similar to that worn by the brothers and holds the role of leading chants/cheers with the crowd, he rides on the back of a horse, which is just two other freshman in a costume.

A relatively new tradition is the praying of the Angelus at the end of seventh period every day which began in the fall of 2009.
