I have just updated from 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS & now have 2 software options: The clunky old Ubuntu Software-Centre & Ubuntu Software. Is it recommended and/or safe (wise?) to purge the software-centre & only use Ubuntu Software?

    run sudo apt full-upgrade and see if it goes away

  • Just tried this & it looks like there's nothing to add to the upgrade I've already done: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

  • This is me I would remove the other (older) but that my personal not professional opinion!

  • I share your opinion! Just read an old post here about a risk of removing ubuntu-desktop if I did. It was from 5 years ago, but I don't want to risk it without asking first. Can I remove the software-centre in terminal?

You can simulate software-center removal to see what will be impacted:

sudo apt -s remove software-center

I don't have it installed so cannot show you what removal would look like.

A simulated install looks like this though:

$ sudo apt -s install software-center
Reading package lists... Done

As you can see it has a great number of dependencies. By comparison ubuntu-software has none that would be removed:

$ sudo apt -s remove ubuntu-software
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
ubuntu-software
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Remv ubuntu-software [3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.11]

  • Then how would OP handle this safely as I see a lot of removal?

  • Ok I see all re for xenial so I think it would be safe to remove, then?
    – George Udosen

  • @GeorgeUdosen That is why we simulate first, see what might happen and then proceed if all looks well. Before making a call OP can update question with -s simulation output.

You can simulate software-center removal to see what will be impacted:

sudo apt -s remove software-center

I don't have it installed so cannot show you what removal would look like.

A simulated install looks like this though:

  • Then how would OP handle this safely as I see a lot of removal?

  • Ok I see all re for xenial so I think it would be safe to remove, then?

  • @GeorgeUdosen That is why we simulate first, see what might happen and then proceed if all looks well. Before making a call OP can update question with -s simulation output.

    @PhilLeslie Nice. The beauty of simulation. There's a lot to like in Linux.

You can simulate software-center removal to see what will be impacted:

sudo apt -s remove software-center

I don't have it installed so cannot show you what removal would look like.

A simulated install looks like this though:

$ sudo apt -s install software-center

As you can see it has a great number of dependencies. By comparison ubuntu-software has none that would be removed:

$ sudo apt -s remove ubuntu-software
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
ubuntu-software
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

As you can see it has a great number of dependencies. By comparison ubuntu-software has none that would be removed:

$ sudo apt -s remove ubuntu-software
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
ubuntu-software
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Remv ubuntu-software [3.20.5-0ubuntu0.16.04.11]

  • @GeorgeUdosen That is why we simulate first, see what might happen and then proceed if all looks well. Before making a call OP can update question with -s simulation output.
