Problems with 'two_factor_auth' in Gitlab 11.8

I am struggling with an upgraded Version of gitlab. The "unicorn" - app seems to redirect to "/Profile/two_factor_auth" directly after successfull authentication. But the 'two_factor_auth' page times out:

time="2019-02-18T16:47:16+01:00" level=error msg=error
correlation_id=* error="badgateway: failed after 40s: EOF"
method=GET uri=/profile/two_factor_auth

So i want to disable 2FA for the Moment. I de-installed the gem with

gem uninstall devise-two-factor

and restarted Gitlab, but it still gets redirected there.

Since i cannot debug the unicorn application, i am not able to determine the error. Any ideas ?
