Mounting a filesystem while excluding certain directories

I'm using SSHFS with Fuse currently to mount our LAMP stack web server. Everything works however it takes several minutes to mount all of the subdirectories due to our enormous "node_modules" folders. In the past I've changed the mount point to a subfolder which is past the node_modules folder, the problem now is that I need access to folders around node_modules.

So then my question is, can I somehow mount the filesystem while ignoring all folders named "node_modules"?
