vi adds a previously deleted line from another file when I open a file

I've been using vi (vim) for 30+ years, but in the last few months something inexplicable has been happening that causes serious problems. What seems to be happening is that I might delete a line in a file. Close that file, and then open another file (perhaps the next day). When I'm not looking, it seems to insert the previously deleted line at the top of the second file when I open it. I rarely notice this and it causes serious problems. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I can't always reproduce the problem, so I'm not exactly sure what really happens. I have deleted my ancient .exrc file in hopes that it might be the problem. Not even sure anymore what some of the stuff in it was supposed to do, but to be on the safe side, I'm including it here.
