This diagram I made depicts what I am trying to do. I have an old mini laptop connected to a router via ethernet and a 6tb external HD. I want to make the laptop a file server. It has Ubuntu OS, vsftpd, openssh-server and filezilla installed and an external HD. My goal is to access and upload content onto the HD anywhere I want to. The problem is that all of the tutorials and instruction I have encountered online only told me how to make is accessible on my private home network but not from other networks. I also learned that I need to get a hostname to access the files.

So my questions are:

  • How can I access my external HD remotely from any network?

  • How do I setup/get the hostname?
