I'm using Okular version:

Qt: 4.8.6
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.2
Okular: 0.20.2
I'm trying to understand how the annotations work because I would like to store my progress on git, saving only the annotation and not the whole PDF.

I've noticed that without exporting as .okular files, some xml files are created inside this folder:

~.kde/share/apps/okular/docdata
So if I delete this file, all the annotations disappear.

If instead I use the export as archive file menu option, the annotations seem to be embedded inside the pdf. The generated okular file in fact contains the pdf plus two xml files, but these files do not contain any info about the annotations..

Can someone help me to understand why this behavior?

Another thing I'd like to know if the way that okular saves the annotation is standard. That means, if these annotations can be opened by other pdf reader, or if I can see via okular annotations created with other pdf readers. I almost always use Linux, but it seemes that okular is not so easy to get on Windows.

I've been on the KDE for windows page but the documentation about installing okular or KDE on windows seems missing..
