I have a Debian 9 home file server (hostname NAS). I configured Exim4 as Smarthost, no local mail. When I send a e-mail to root, it picks up the alias in /etc/aliases and sends it to my outlook.com address. However, a second email gets also sent, to root@NAS delivered to the Outlook smtp server. And this results in a Undelivery notice from Microsoft to my outlook.com address. I tried various configurations, but to no avail.
Below is my configuration.
dc_eximconfig_configtype='satellite'
dc_other_hostnames=''
dc_local_interfaces='127.0.0.1'
dc_readhost='NAS'
dc_relay_domains=''
dc_minimaldns='false'
dc_relay_nets=''
dc_smarthost='smtp-mail.outlook.com::587'
CFILEMODE='644'
dc_use_split_config='true'
dc_hide_mailname='true'
dc_mailname_in_oh='true'
dc_localdelivery='mail_spool'

Please edit your question to include the command you use to "send e-mail to root", the lines it generates into/var/log/exim4/mainlog
and the contents of your/etc/aliases
. Also, explaining what you want to achieve might help us suggest better approaches. For example, thedc_readhost='NAS'
setting is surprising, did you look up its documentation inman update-exim4.conf
?
