I am trying to start my svn server with the command svnserve -d -r /path/to/repository, but it gives me the error:

svnserve: E000098: Can't bind server socket: Adress already in use.

But when I ps -ef | grep svnserve to see if there is a svn process(in order to kill it) running:

ps -ef | grep svnserve

I get this:

root 7297 7065 0 11:22 pts/0 00:00:00 grep svnserve

which means that there is no svnserve process running. Why am I getting this error; how can I start the svn??

  • Check your port. Run netstat and see what service is already binded to the port svn is trying to bind to.

  • The port 80 that svn is trying to bind is being used by http, the one that I used to access the svn repositories.
