I have a Dell Latitude 3340 laptop with Windows 10 installed. I'm trying to wipe that and do a fresh install of Debian instead.

I have a USB drive (16GB) and have been using UnetBootin to make a bootable USB drive.

I had to disable UEFI secure boot in the BIOS so that I could boot from my USB.

But when I select and boot from the USB I get the error "Missing operating system. Selected boot device failed".

I have using the "NetInstall" options and also the "HDMedia" option where you have to download debian-9.5.0-amd64-xfce-CD-1.iso and place it into the USB drive. Neither of those work, they both show the same error message.

I have also tried formatting the USB drive before running UnetBootin, this also makes no difference.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

  • Use win32diskimager instead of unetbootin.

  • Unetbootin is specifically NOT recommended for Debian. Etcher is good.
