Allocate free space to root partition

I have created 86 GB unallocated space using GParted Live CD and I moved it into the extended partition but there is a 1GB boot partition between the unallocated space and my root partition.
In the GParted live CD I tried to move the boot partition to the left so that the unallocated space comes under it (i.e. on the right size) to be continous with the root partition. However, the free space gets added to the boot partition instead.
I wanted to know if shrinking the new size of the boot partition after the free space has been added would reduce it back to its orginal size of 1Gs which would then leave unallocated space directly next to the root partition.
Is GParted not the right tool for doing this? Or maybe there is a better way to do it in the terminal or even another GUI tool?
