I am not sure if this is the right site to ask this, if it is incorrect I am sorry. I will try to be brief.

Here is my problem: I am running Kali Linux on a usb with persistence, I installed virtual box and I am trying to run metasploitable 2. When I start it everything goes well until fsck dies with exit status 4. It then requests that fsck must be done manually however to do so I need the root password. I have tried msfadmin, root, toor, user and whatever I could find on the internet but nothing lets me log in.

I hope it is clear: without the password I can not utilize the shell given to me to manually do fsck.

EDIT: I will add a screenshot and hopefully that will make it more clear. Whats running in VirtualBox is metasploitable 2 which is a ubuntu 8.04. I understand that Linux its for professionals but having all those tools without having to worry about a thing (to set them up etc) is so nice.

It's not clear to me which Linux instance is running the fsck and hence which instance you require the root password to - the Kali instance, or what ever is running in the VirtualBox. You could try and tidy the question up and that might help, but note that there will be pressure to close it, given it's related to Kali which is generally meant to be run by people with lots of Linux experience.

  • It appears to be asking for the root password for the Ubuntu machine running in VMware, in order to fsck the read only mouted FS. The default password for root in metasploitable is root but the option to change it is given at first run....... did you change it?

  • I have not. It's the first time I run metasploitable. I emailed the developers and their answer was that either the quality of the USB is not the best or there is a bug on the overlay filesystem. I have given up trying and I am installing kali on an hdd. Thanks for the help anyways!
