This article: https://techfrag.com/2016/03/24/amd-publishes-next-gen-polaris-patches-to-linux-kernel/ states that "AMD has just submitted the initial open-source driver code for their upcoming Polaris GPUs"

The article suggests that kernel 4.7+ should include the Polaris 11/Baffin GPU driver ... Am I correct in assuming that this means that Polaris 11/Baffin video cards (like the AMD Radeon RX 460/Radon RX 560) should just plug-and-play in Linux (as long as the kernel is updated to 4.7 or later) without any additional need to load or configure things like:

firmware-amd-graphics, xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu, xserver-xorg-video-radeon,
fglrx-driver, etc?

  • POLARIS11 support has been around for a little while in the kernel, but you still need the corresponding usermode drivers for Xorg and Mesa.

  • Thanks Ignacio ... so - even if the kernel supports it - if there are no xorg or mesa drivers for the card in the Linux version I'm using (Debian Jessie), the card won't work properly?

  • It will work properly with the text console. Other display methods need their drivers in order to integrate with the kernel driver.

  • Thanks. So basically the article is saying that only the firmware for Polaris 11 (normally handled by firmware-amd-graphics) has been integrated into the kernel?
