Active graphics card: Unknown on Linux mint 18.3 (based on ubuntu 16.4) after installing CUDA

I know similar questions have been asked here before, but those solutions don't work for me.
I have GTX 960M card and I'm trying to install CUDA (following instructions on here), but every time it makes my active graphics card show up as Unknown and I need to use timeshift to restore it to working state (without CUDA installed).
