kernel panic crash grub error

After a kernel panic, ubuntu will not reboot. On restart, system freezes with
Error: failure readung sector 0x48c02 from 'hd0'.
Press any key to continue.....
Nothing happens on key press however.
I was able previously to get to grub> prompt but the seversl suggestions i came across do not work. Further, the screen picture i took yesterday will not load on this request form for an unknown reason, and because i can't get it to grub> again today i cant even give you the errors i found there.
