Making an “unsupported” printer appear in CUPS?

We've got a Datacard SD160 card printer that I'd like to share to the network via a Linux box (a Raspberry Pi, but I've tried this with 2 laptops and a desktop).

I've installed CUPS and enabled the remote admin. When I try and add the USB printer, it doesn't show up:

Adding printer in CUPS

Nor does it show up in lpinfo -v:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lpinfo -v

network beh

network ipp14

network ipps

network ipp

network lpd

network http

network https

network socket

However it does show up in lsusb:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0a27:0300 Datacard Group

If I plug our other Datacard printer in (a CP40 Plus), it shows up, but that's not the printer we want to network.

Is there a reason it's not showing up in CUPS, and can I force it to?

I suspect something about the printer means it's not self-identifying as a printer, but surely there must be a way to override that?
