The Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, founded in 1951, is the state body responsible for the implementation of Turkmen scientific and technical policy. The academy was closed under president Saparmurat Niyazov and reopened by his successor, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

Structure


The academy has three departments:[1]


  • Humanitarian and economic sciences

  • Physical and mathematical, chemical, geological and engineering sciences

  • Medical, biological and agricultural sciences


History


  • 1922 - Turkmen Scientific Commission

  • 1925 - Scientific Research Institute, for the study of history, geography, literature and art

  • 1926 - State Academic Council, under the People's Commissariat of Education

  • 1932 - Turkmen Scientific Research Institute.

  • March 31, 1936 - Resolution of the Central Executive Committee and the Council of People's Commissars of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, divided into the Institute of History and Language and Literature (under the Central Executive Committee) and the Council of People's Commissars of the Turkmen SSR

  • 1937 - Merger with the Turkmenistan State Research Institute of Language and Literature of the Republican Committee of Sciences

  • 1940 - The Foundation Turkmen Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Socialist Republic of the Union unites the Institutes of Language and Literature, Biology and Geology

  • 1945 - Thirty-five Turkmens are among the researchers. The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture (part of the technical institute, the Laboratory of Chemistry and Technology of Oil, and the seismology department open.

  • June 1951 – Present academy established

  • 1956 - The Agriculture and Livestock Institutes move to the Ministry of Agriculture.

  • 1957 - Institute of Chemistry and Economics opens. The Institute of Biology is separated into the Institute of Botany and the Institute of Zoology and Parasitology.

  • 1986 - The academy has 15 research institutions.

  • Summer 1998 - The academy comes under the President of Turkmenistan.

  • 2009 - The Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan becomes the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan as science and technology adviser to the president.

2009 revival


With the revival of the academy in 2009 the structure of science and research in Turkmenistan changed, reflecting reforms initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. With the new structure of the academy, research is centralized. The academy was restored according to presidential resolution number 10458 dated June 12, 2009, "About questions of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan". According to the resolution, 11 institutes and three organisations serving the science sector were moved: the library, the printing house and the Ylym publishing house. G.A. Mezilov is the academy's president.
