Formula that relates virtual, physical, resident, non-resident (swap) memory?

Is there some mathematical or conceptual formula that relates these different forms of memory? I know that virtual memory is the largest of them all, and is made up of all the other types of memory. But how do programs like top, calculate the different types of memory? Or how does /proc/meminfo
even get its information?
