Running Debian 9.3 and i3, I am trying to set my gnome-terminal (v3.22.2) transparent.

My last try is using devilspie2. I tried to follow this tutorial. I printed the name of the applications that devilspie2 is detecting and my terminal has the name "Terminal" as expected. I can understand why the functions center and set_window_size does not work, but what about the set_window_opacity one?

I also tried the function set_opacity without success.

How I tested it is to create the .lua file like in the tutorial and launch the command devilspie2.

The only working solution I found is compton but I would rather not use it because of some compatibilities issues.
I also tried dconf write keys about transparency: no errors but no changes.

Edit: the devilspie2 solution works fine with Gnome 3 wm (Debian 9.3 too), so the problem is with i3wm.

i3wm is not a compositing window manager; you'll need a compositor for most graphic effects.

  • I guess I will stick to compton then, thanks.
