Fedora 27 switch DE from gnome 3 to MATE not possible

I use Ubuntu, but recently got Fedora for use at work. I want to switch to Mate instead of the default Gnome.
I have installed mate desktop, via the command sudo dnf groupinstall mate-desktop
I log out and at the log in screen, the option to select DE comes up and I select the "Mate" from the option.
When I login, nothing changes. Still on the Gnome.
Even switching between the "Gnome" and "Gnome Classic", no visible change in UI.
I've restarted, selected the mate from the DE options. No change.
My last option would be to forcefully delete Gnome and leave the Mate only hanging in there, however, I have no idea what the consequences might.
Am I missing a step?

Check your X startup files in your home directory to ensure that they don't force GNOME.

@IgnacioVazquez-Abrams New to fedora, so might be missing something, but there's no~/.xinitrcor~/.xprofilefile in my home directory. Stored somewhere else?

Nope. Fedora doesn't modify the default locations for that.
