I installed nvidia-lts and ran sudo nvidia-xconfig hoping that it will make the Nvidia drivers work, but it created a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf which prevented me from launching X with startx.

How can I get the Nvidia Driver to work?

  • nvidia involves a kernel driver, it should have the same name AFAIR. this output shows "nouveau" which is a different driver. Please let us know if you have tried rebooting? That would make sure that any changes to kernel driver priority are applied to the running system.

I could get the Nvidia Driver to work when I was using Ubuntu just by installing a package from the repos.

How can I get the Nvidia Driver to work?

I installed nvidia-lts and ran sudo nvidia-xconfig hoping that it will make the Nvidia drivers work, but it created a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf which prevented me from launching X with startx.

  • nvidia involves a kernel driver, it should have the same name AFAIR. this output shows "nouveau" which is a different driver. Please let us know if you have tried rebooting? That would make sure that any changes to kernel driver priority are applied to the running system.

  • I tried rebooting a few times, but I still can't start X and lspci -k still prints nouveau as the kernel module for the GPU.
