Does it make a difference if a the remote LAN proxy is the router or non-router?

Remote LANs are configured with routers that are WAN accessible through SSH for the purpose of http tunneling to enable the 'mother ship' to access remote LAN devices with a web browser.
If the remote LAN's inbound port 22 SSH traffic is forwarded to a Unix box (raspberry pi pinned to an IP on the remote LAN) instead of the router, would be the impact? I ask because I suspect there are consequences, but unable to think of any.
