I want to have Unity as my default desktop (CTRL-ALT-F7) and KDE as a secondary virtual desktop (CTRL-ALT-F8) so that I can run KDE applications like Quartus on it without messing with my typical setup.
From this question I'm under the impression that I could start a virtual desktop from a TTY with the following command:

startx /usr/sbin/lightdm :1 vt8

But I don't want to have to run a command in a TTY every time I boot, and that command fails with the following error anyways:

xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/<user>/.Xauthority

Which was NOT fixed with rm ~/.Xauthority-* as per this answer.

My question is this: How can I get the secondary virtual desktop to start on boot?

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 with ubuntu-unity-desktop and kubuntu-desktop packages installed. I can log out of my Unity session and switch to KDE and log in without problems.
